ProtoScan is free to download and self-host, with every feature included and no license key. These terms cover how you may use it.

In plain termsYou may download, install and run ProtoScan for free — personally or commercially — on as many of your own systems as you like, with no device limits and no fees. The software is provided as-is, with no warranty, and only for networks you are authorized to scan.

These Terms ("Terms") govern your use of the ProtoScan software ("the Software") and the protoscannetwork.com website ("the Site"). By downloading, installing or using the Software, you agree to these Terms.

1. License grant

Subject to these Terms, you are granted a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to download, install, and use the Software for your own personal or internal business purposes, on any number of systems you own or operate. There is no charge for this license.

2. Ownership

The Software is licensed, not sold. All rights, title and interest in and to the Software — including its name, branding and design — remain with its authors. These Terms do not grant you any rights to ProtoScan's trademarks or branding.

3. Restrictions

You agree not to:

  • Sell, rent, sublicense or redistribute the Software, or offer it as a paid hosted service, without written permission.
  • Remove, alter or obscure any copyright, trademark or attribution notices.
  • Misrepresent the origin of the Software, or distribute modified copies as if they were the official release.
  • Use the Software in violation of any applicable law.

4. Acceptable use — authorized networks only

ImportantProtoScan performs active network discovery, scanning and vulnerability assessment. You may only use it on networks and devices that you own or have explicit, documented authorization to assess.

You are solely responsible for ensuring you have authorization to scan any target. Unauthorized scanning or access to computer systems is illegal in many jurisdictions. The authors accept no responsibility for any misuse of the Software.

5. Third-party components

The Software includes or depends on third-party open-source components (such as nmap and various Python libraries), each of which is provided under its own license. Those licenses continue to govern those components, and nothing in these Terms limits your rights under them.

6. No warranty

THE SOFTWARE AND SITE ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. You assume all risk for results obtained from using the Software, including any decisions made based on its scan results, inventory or vulnerability findings.

7. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, IN NO EVENT SHALL THE AUTHORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR BUSINESS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF (OR INABILITY TO USE) THE SOFTWARE OR SITE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

8. Your responsibilities

  • Securing the server on which you install the Software and the credentials it stores.
  • Complying with all laws and policies applicable to your use, including those governing network scanning and data protection.
  • Maintaining backups of any data you rely on.

9. Termination

This license applies for as long as you comply with these Terms. If you breach them, your rights under this license end automatically. Because the Software is self-hosted, you may stop using it at any time by uninstalling it.

10. Changes

We may revise these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Software or Site after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. The "Last updated" date above indicates the latest revision.
